Protestors demanding the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives picketed outside Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Sudhir’s Hulhumalé residence last night.

The protestors stood outside the Amin Avenue apartment complex, where Sudhir resides, and demanded the removal of Indian troops and the resignation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Police had barricaded the area, and had taken some protestors into custody.

The Progressive National Coalition had initiated a campaign called Maldivians In Defence of Independence to remove all Indian military from the Maldives, and to nullify all “dangerous” military agreements made between the Maldives and India.

Several Indian military personnel are currently stationed in the north and south of the Maldives. Some are attached to the Indian military aircraft and helicopters, and others man the surveillance stations based in the country.

There are also reports that Indian military officers will be stationed for many decades at the harbour to be developed with Indian assistance at Uthuru Thila Falhu.
