Mewar (Madhya Pradesh, India), October 05 (KMS): Authorities in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh have demolished three houses belonging to Muslims solely on concocted charges.

The authorities took the extreme action on the alleged involvement of the Muslims youth in a scuffle with Hindu youth in Surajni village in Mewar district of the state during a Hindu festival.

The police in Madhya Pradesh claimed that the Muslim youth disrupted the Hindu festival Navaratri, the claim which has been vehemently denied by the Muslim families.

The police claimed that during the operation the local administration accompanied by police demolished the houses of those accused of pelting stones on a Garba gathering besides attacking the organizer of the event with a sharp weapon. Garba is a traditional dance performed during the nine-day long Navratri festival.

Muslim activist and community organiser Aasif Mujtaba reacting to the action in a tweet said, “How easy has it become to demean Muslim, accuse them of bogus charges and demolish their house in broad daylight. Even if someone is accused of any charge, why the normal legal course is not taken? This communal treatment is totally Islamophobic.”

Six months ago, over 50 properties of Muslims were bulldozed by the authorities in the state. The Muslims were falsely accused of violence during another Hindu festival Ram Navami.

Similar demolition drives were seen in Muslim neighborhoods across northern and central India. Muslims argue this is the latest attempt to harass and marginalize them. They point to a pattern of rising Islamophobia under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindutva Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
