MALE : Former Economic Minister and Member of Parliament for the Maavashu constituency, Mohamed Saeed called the government to stop acting as if there is no economic crisis.

Sharing screenshots of two news articles on Twitter, Saeed tweeted that the government has come to a stop and its leaders have been distraught over the unsettled accounts, frantic to acquire funds however they can.

However, Saeed added that the dejection was that while the government has decided to scour through the public’s pockets, the President, President tIbrahim Mohamed Solih had refrained from uttering a word in defense of his own administration.

The parliament has approved the bill for the Amendment of the Goods and Services Act, proposed by the government with claims of reducing the budget deficit issue, increasing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) rates to 8 percent and 16 percent, respectively, effective January 2023.

Additionally, Finance Minister Ameer Ibrahim had asked debt forgiveness of MVR 6 billion from the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), and revealed that the government has vetted MVR 13.5 billion collected as pensions into t-bills.

Despite the indications to the contrary, the government continues to deny the existence of an economic crisis, on the verge of a national crisis.(Journal-Male)
