Opposition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, has left for Mahibadhoo (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll) to raise support for the “India Out” campaign. The India Out campaign is a grassroots movement, later adopted by the opposition, that calls for the removal of Indian military personnel and assets from the Maldives.

Since his acquittal by the Supreme Court, the opposition leader has expanded the scope of the India Out campaign, and has begun touring several islands as part of raising support for the movement. He had most recently visited Vilin’gili (Gaafu Alifu Atoll). Before that, he had visited Shaviyani, Faafu, and Raa Atolls.

The government has taken many steps to put a stop to the campaign, claiming that the movement posed a threat to national security.

Most recently, Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed had requested the Parliament Committee on National Security Services (also known as the 241 Committee) to launch a full-scale inquiry into the effect the India Out movement would have on the Maldives as a whole. Several state institutions have been summoned for questioning by the Committee.

The opposition show no signs of stopping their campaign.
