The 16th Doha Forum has wrapped up with speakers from around the world touching on issues ranging from global and regional security to conflict resolution and climate change. The conference, organised by Qatar’s foreign ministry, was attended by heads of state from South Africa, Afghanistan, Yemen, Mauritius, and Niger, along with Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general.

US Special Forces Operating Secretly in Libya for Months

Teams of United States Special Operations commandos have been active in Libya since last year, the Washington Post reported Thursday, citing statements from unnamed US military officers. The American soldiers are operating from secret bases that were established last year, without any public disclosure, in eastern and western Libya, near Benghazi and Misurata. The US troops are scouting targets and recruiting proxy forces as part of “contact teams,” according to the Post.

Last week the Syrian regime bombed Al-Kamouna camp for internally displaced people on the outskirts of Idlib. These IDPs had fled from the hell of Aleppo to what they thought would be a relatively safe haven. Instead, over 100 of them were killed and injured in what was clearly a war crime. It was committed just hours after most UN Security Council members condemned the regime’s brutal attacks on Aleppo, considering them war crimes given the systematic destruction of the city’s hospitals and infrastructure.

Iraqi terrorism suspects held in ‘shocking’ conditions: Amnesty

The Iraqi authorities are holding often innocent “terrorism” suspects in dire conditions across the country and have no ability to process cases, Amnesty International said on Monday. Rights group says authorities admit that most of the 700 men held in one jail – none of whom have been charged – are innocent. Huge numbers of men, mostly Sunni Muslims, have been rounded up and imprisoned over suspected militant links (AFP)

If anyone wants a short course on what’s wrong with US diplomacy look no further than US Ambassador to Hungary Coleen Bell’s speech Friday to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian Parliament. In typical diplo-speak there was plenty of flowery language about shared values, fish swimming together in the same water (?), sappy poetics like “together, out of that winter, we would force the spring,” and talk of together being “part of the world’s greatest military and political alliance.”
