Dr. FAHMY ISMAIL

Dr Fahmy Ismail was educated at Royal College, Colombo where he led the College Debating Team, held office in many student associations and made a most useful contribution to the life of the institution. He graduated from the University of Peradeniya (Ceylon) with a degree in Veterinary Science. He obtained his post graduate degree in Food Technology from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He has undergone an individual study program on Urban and Environmental Management at the University Of Birmingham, UK and followed management training programs in Malyasia, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

A Veterinarian, Public Servant/Administrator, a Consultant in Food Technology, Trainer and a Visiting University Lecturer he held 

office and served in many professional, social and religious organizations. He was President of the Sri Lanka Veterinary Association, President Colombo Plan International Society, President Ithihaad Ahlissunnah, President Sri Lanka National Association for Prevention of Blindness,  District Governor Lions Clubs International District 306B2 Sri Lanka and served on the Executive Committees of the Organization of Professional Association, Royal Commonwealth Society, Royal College Old Boys Union, Supreme Council of Sufi Tariqas, Sri Lanka Islamic Centre,  Ad-Diayathush Shazuliyathul Fassiya of SriLanka, Orient Club and many other organizations.

He also served as Resource Person on the sub-Committee of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly on Public Sector Reforms, in many national Committees and in the Boards of government agencies such as the Urban Development Authority, Governing Council of the Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance and the Public Performance Board.

He was the Secretary General and later Advisor of the National Chapter of Mayors, Sri Lanka.

Dr Ismail served as the Chief Veterinary Surgeon, Colombo and as Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Colombo. Thereafter he joined the United Nations as National Technical Advisor, United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNHabitat), Sri Lanka. He has made over 40 presentations at international conferences/workshops world over.

Dr Ismail was Senior Advisor to Hon Karu Jayasuriya, the then Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.

He has received many local and international awards including the Citation Award for services rendered to the Veterinary profession; Friends of Humanity award for services rendered to humanity and was recognized among the 100 Colombo Plan Scholars of Distinction by the Australian government. He is an all island JP.
