SUPREME COURT: Former President Maithirpala and 5 others ordered to pay compensation to Easter attack victims

Maithripala Sirisena : Rs 100 million

Former Secretary of Defence Hemasiri Fernando- Rs. 50 million

Former State Intelligence Service Director Nilantha Jayawardena Rs 75 million

Former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara- Rs. 75 million

National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis – Rs. 10 million

COLOMBO: The Supreme Court ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena and five others to pay compensation on Thursday,Jan,11 for their failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks despite receiving prior information.

The others who were charged included former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former IGP Pujith Jayasundara, former National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis and former Chief of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena .

The order was issued by a seven-member Supreme Court Judge bench, when a plaint filed regarding alleged negligence and failure to prevent the terrorist attacks on April 21, 2019, was taken up this morning (Jan. 12).

Accordingly, they were ordered to pay compensation to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks in 2019

The Supreme Court ordered former President Sirisena to pay Rs. 100 million, and former Secretary of Defence Hemasiri Fernando to pay Rs. 50 million in compensation to the victims of the Easter attacks.

The court also ordered former State Intelligence Service Director Nilantha Jayawardena and former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara to pay Rs. 75 million each, and National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis is to pay Rs. 10 million as compensation to the victims.

The verdict was issued after 12 petitions that were filed by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, the families of the victims of the attacks, Catholic priests and several others were heard before a seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya
