A 26-year-old Muslim, Litan Miah, was lynched by a Hindutva mob on Tuesday morning in Sepahijala district of the Indian state of Tripura.

The Hindu mob claimed that Miah, a resident of Tarapukur area of the district, alleged that he went to the village to lift cows for smuggling. The police said that they failed to get any evidence supporting the allegations of the assailants.

Soon after the incident, hundreds of locals blocked the road demanding the immediate arrest of the people involved in the crime.

Jamal Miah, the father of the deceased Muslim youth, lodged a complaint following which the two accused were arrested.

Police said that two people Sentu Debnath (40) and Amal Chandra Das (50) were arrested in connection with the killing of Miah.

It is to mention here that mob killings, mainly Hindu lynchings of Muslims, have become a routine matter in the northeastern Indian state with more than a dozen cases of brutal lynching have been reported in the last five years.

In June last year, four Muslim youth identified as Billai Mia (27), Zayed Hussain (28) Saiful Islam (21), and Salim Hussain were dubbed as cattle thieves by a Hindu mob before they were brutally beaten up and lynched by the mob in Khowai district in Tripura.
