Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a Washington-based media watchdog, on Saturday called on the Indian government to release Sajad Gul, a journalist who was arrested after he posted a video of a family shouting anti-India slogans after their kin was killed in an operation carried out by security forces in Srinagar.

Gul, a student of journalism was working for The Kashmir Walla as a trainee reporter. He was charged under sections 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 505B (fear or alarm to the public) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The video posted by him was related to a protest by the family of Salim Parray who was killed on Monday in Harwan area on the outskirts of Srinagar. Authorities said that he was linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Reacting to Sajjad Gul’s arrest, CPJ said that authorities must immediately release him and drop their investigations related to his journalistic work.
