The United States of America has condemned the release of former Parliamentarian and murder convict Duminda Silva under a presidential pardon.

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Alaina B. Teplitz said the pardon of Duminda Silva, whose conviction the Supreme Court upheld in 2018, undermines the rule of law.

However, the Ambassador welcomed the release of a group of prisoners who were detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Sixteen (16) prisoners who were detained under the PTA were released by the Government today, in view of the Poson festival.

“We welcome the early release of PTA prisoners, but the pardon of Duminda Silva, whose conviction the Supreme Court upheld in 2018, undermines rule of law. Accountability and equal access to justice are fundamental to the UN Sustainable Development Goals to which the Government of Sri Lanka has committed,” Ambassador Teplitz said. (NewsWire)
