A 25-year-old Muslim youth, Mohammed Furqan, was brutally thrashed by Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel at Janakpur Road Railway Station on Thursday, resulting in severe injuries. The assault was so vicious that Furqan’s intestine burst out from his stomach.
The incident occurred while Furqan was at the station to drop off his aunt, who was travelling to Mumbai. A dispute with a passenger escalated, and GRP personnel intervened, beating Furqan with sticks. Despite his pleas to avoid hitting his recently operated abdomen, the policemen targeted that area, causing his stomach to burst open on the left side.
Furqan had undergone intestinal surgery about two years ago, and the recent attack caused his surgical wounds to reopen. Videos of Furqan’s intestine protruding from his stomach and the police beating him have gone viral, triggering widespread outrage on social media.
Witnesses at the station, angered by the GRP’s barbaric behaviour, vandalized the Janakpur Road station. Reports indicate that the crowd broke iron grills and glass gates at the main entrance of the station superintendent’s office, causing a ruckus. Several government employees sustained injuries during the scuffle.
SP (Railway) Muzaffarpur commented on the incident, stating that it began when police personnel tried to resolve a dispute between two passengers over a berth. The stitches on Furqan’s surgical wounds were ripped open as he was shoved and pushed by the police.
“Furqan is under treatment and is out of danger now. We have taken his statement, which indicates that the incident resulted from a scuffle between two groups. The GRP used force against him,” said the SP.
Two policemen, Gyanendra Paswan and Gorelal Chaudhry, have been temporarily suspended. A probe has been ordered to investigate the incident thoroughly, and appropriate action will be taken upon completion of the investigation.
