The Supreme Court of Maldives has ruled in favor of the appeal case lodged by the opposition leader former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The opposition leader was freed after spending 2 years and 2 days in jail for charges of money laundering.

The Supreme Court of Maldives has ruled in favor of the appeal case lodged by the opposition leader former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The opposition leader was freed after spending 2 years and 2 days in jail for charges of money laundering.

At the hearing led by Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir, Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Dr Mohamed Ibrahim, judges overturned the conviction by the Criminal Court of Maldives.

On 28th November 2019 former President Abdulla Yameen was convicted of money laundering $1 million. He was sentenced to 5 years in jail along with a $5 million fine.
