Instead of welcoming SAARC member State Afghanistan regaining freedom as an independent nation, after 43 years of foreign invasion, occupation, humiliation, pain and suffering through two imposed wars, the United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickramasinghe’s media statement criticizing the government’s recognition of the new political reality in our neighbourhood, must be condemned as exposing the UNP’s political bankruptcy.

With close upon a hundred Sri Lankans in Afghanistan, whose safety can be assured only by talking to those exercising power in that country today, the UNP which never condemned the foreign invasions of Afghanistan or the Middle Eastern countries or earlier the Buddhist countries in the Far- East has no moral right to decry the people of Afghanistan resuming control of their own country.

The UNP did not fail to incite hatred by reminding of the attack on the revered Bamiyan Buddha statue, universally condemned particularly by Muslims and Muslim countries. However, the UNP did not think it appropriate to record, that the sixth century statues had been, like in Pakistan, protected for 14 centuries by the Afghan people, who benefitted from the tourist income. The then supreme leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Omar who had said that Afghanistan had nothing to do with 9/11 in the US and that some foreigners with Scandinavian links had approached him, before the attack, with regard to repairing the statues and that the attack possibly by foreign elements, six months before 9/11 may not be coincidental. It is widely believed that the attack was carried out by foreign elements through Afghan agents to sow hatred against the Taliban and to divide Buddhists and Muslims, prior to the US launching the New World Order following 9/11, widely perceived as an inside job!

The UNP statement has ignored ground realities that the US which toppled the Talibans in 2001 entered into a peace accord on 29.02.2020 and will soon work with the Talibans. The European Union HR/VP Joseph Borrell had said, “The Taliban have won the war, so we will have to talk with them”. Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country in 1989 suffered a similar fate to the US, has said that we should “end the foolish approach of imposing alien values from the outside”. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had said that the “international community should support and lead Afghanistan”. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the Afghans have “removed the shackles of en-slavery”. Bangladesh, Iran, Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have made clear indications of recognizing the new government in Afghanistan.

Ranil Wickremesinghe has the dubious record of supporting foreign powers, invading Asian countries for the benefit of those countries’ sprawling arms industries, which kill innocent people everywhere. The UNP must, in the national interest, avoid offering its leader as a puppet to blood soaked powers.

The only danger in the exit of US and NATO from Afghanistan is the reality that the arms industry and its agents will intensify scouting for the next war zone, which US State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin have already set their hearts in South Asia. Yes that is our region!
