A noted legal expert has demanded an independent probe into the killings of Muslim political leader and his brother in Indian police custody in Utter Pradesh state.

The Indian Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan said that there should be an independent probe into the police encounters and the murder of jailed Muslim leader, Atiq Ahmad, and his brother Ashraf.

“His (Atiq’s) son was killed a few days ago and then he was killed along with his brother… It’s very obvious that all these were orchestrated. It shows an alarming state of affairs regarding the rule of law. It’s the duty of the Supreme Court to order an independent investigation into all these killings,” Adv Prashant Bhushan said.

The jailed Muslim political leader and former Member of Indian Parliament Atiq Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf (49) were killed by three Indian police backed Hindutva assailants posing as journalists when the two brothers were interacting with the media while being escorted by the police personnel to a medical college in Prayagraj city for a check-up on Saturday night.

The custodial killing took place hours after the last rites of Atiq Ahmad’s son Asad, who along with one of his associates was killed by Indian police in a fake encounter in Jhansi on April 13.
