Several mosques, shops and houses belonging to Muslims were attacked in at least six areas of Tripura. The incidents took place during protests against recent attacks on the Hindu minority in Bangladesh.
Mosques in Krishnagar, Dharmanagar, Panisagar, Chandrapur were vandalised by saffron-clad youths on Thursday.
A mosque in Panisagar in North Tripura district was burnt by a violent Hindu mob at 1 am on Friday.
In Kailashahar, a locality near Tripura capital, Agartala, a mob surrounding the mosque shouted “Jai Shri Ram” and placed a saffron flag at the gate of the house of Abdul Mannan, a prominent business man in the region.
Lawyer Abdul Basit Khan’s house in Dharmanagar in North Tripura district was also attacked by Hindutva extremists.
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, a major Muslim organisation, Friday submitted a memorandum at the office of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb seeking his intervention to stop these attacks.
Speaking to media personnel, the organisation’s state president Mufti Tayebur Rahman said, “No one from the Hindu and Muslim communities of Tripura supported the heinous incidents of Bangladesh. We have protested against it before the Bangladesh Visa Office as well,” Rahman said, adding that a few “unruly, communal people” are trying to disrupt the peace and tranquillity of Tripura.
He added that Muslims in far-flung areas are scared to get out of homes.
