Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that the contentious farm laws will be repealed during the winter session. Announcing the decision, PM Modi urged the protesting farmers to return to their homes and fields. PM Modi said that there should be a new beginning after this.

“I want to apologise to the countrymen and want to say from my heart that there must have been a shortcoming in our penance (to work for farmers welfare)…I have come to inform the country that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws. In the Parliament session starting this month, we will complete the constitutional formalities to repeal the laws. Friends, I am urging all the protesting farmers that today is the auspicious occasion of Guru Parv, you can return to your home, to your fields, to your families. Come, let us start a new beginning, let us move forward from a new start, ” said PM Modi.

 

Addressing the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, PM Modi said the government had brought the three farm laws for the benefit of farmers but it could not convince a section of farmers despite best efforts. He said that the three farm laws were aimed at empowering farmers, especially small farmers.

“Our government brought this law with good intention for the welfare of farmers, especially for the welfare of small farmers, in the interest of the agricultural world of the country, in the interest of the country, for the bright future of the poor villages, with full sincerity, with devotion to the farmers but we could not explain to some farmers despite our best efforts that such a sacred thing, absolutely pure was for the farmers’ interest. Even agricultural economists, scientists, progressive farmers had also tried their best to make them understand the importance of agricultural laws,” said PM Modi.

Listing his government’s steps taken for the welfare of farmers, PM Modi said that the agriculture budget has risen by five times with over Rs 1.25 lakh crore being spent annually. PM Modi said that the NDA government worked to provide farmers with seeds at reasonable rates and facilities like micro-irrigation, and 22 crore soil health cards. “Such factors have contributed to increased agriculture production. We strengthened Fasal Bima Yojana and brought more farmers under it,” said PM Modi.
